Robots yesterday, robots today too. And nobody writes better songs about self-loathing robots than Jonathan Coulton.
Coulton has been one of the Internet's musical heroes for about a decade now. Hell, I named this blog series after his famous "Thing-a-Week" challenge where he publicly released a new song every week for an entire year. He's probably best known for providing video game mega-hits Portal and Portal 2 with their end songs, "Still Alive" and "Want You Gone" (more robot music). But outside of his insane songwriting challenges to himself and musical cake lies, Coulton is just a top notch musician and lyricist.
Rarely do I find myself recommending songs to friends and saying, "I don't want to tell you anything more about it. I don't want to spoil it." "All This Time" makes me do that though. I want everyone I know to hear this song with as little background information as possible. All I'll say is just how stunning a piece I think it is, how stylish and heartbreaking the music video is, and how cool it is that he worked so closely with Aimee Mann for Solid State, the recent album this song is featured on. Please, enjoy.
