I had the pleasure of seeing Melina Duterte, or Jay Som, open for Japanese Breakfast and Mitski last summer. Since then, her debut album Everybody Works has been released with an overwhelmingly positive reception. "The Bus Song" is, in my opinion, the song that best represents the lovely album as a whole.
Duterte's gentle voice has this ability to make any rowdy rock show feel intimate regardless of crowd size. The tones and textures she chooses for her arrangements perfectly match the unsteady transition out of youth, a primary theme on the album. But really, above all, she's just really good at writing really pretty, charming songs. And I like the bus!
